Uber 1099: how Uber reports your earnings
Uber gives you three documents, all in the Driver app under Account > Tax Info, or at drivers.uber.com, by January 31: an annual tax summary (not an official form), a Form 1099-K if riders paid over $20,000 across more than 200 trips, and a Form 1099-NEC for promotions, referrals and other payments ($2,000 or more for 2026 payments). The tax summary also lists your online miles, Uber’s fees, tolls and your total tips.
No tax on tips for Uber drivers
Tips riders add in the app count, and your Uber tax summary shows the yearly total. Fares, surge and Quest bonuses are not tips. Rideshare drivers are on the IRS list of tipped occupations, so rider tips qualify. You can deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips from federal income tax for 2025 through 2028 on Schedule 1-A, but not more than your net profit. You still pay self-employment tax on tips.
Deductions for Uber drivers
- Online miles, including miles waiting for a trip and driving to pickups
- Uber’s service and booking fees, if your 1099-K shows gross fares
- City and airport fees, tolls and parking listed in your tax summary
- Phone and data plan (business share), car washes, water or snacks for riders
- Half of your self-employment tax and, if you pay for it yourself, health insurance
Uber mileage deduction 2026: which miles count
Uber’s tax summary reports online miles: waiting for a trip, driving to the pickup and driving the rider. Those online miles are a good starting point. Keep your own log too, so you can support every mile if asked.

Uber tax questions
How much should I set aside for taxes as an Uber driver?
In the example above, an Uber driver sets aside $11 of every $100, about $112 a week, before state tax. Drivers who track mileage usually set aside about $8 to $11 per $100 for federal tax in 2026; more in high-tax states or with few deductible miles.
Does Uber take out taxes?
No. Uber drivers are independent contractors, so Uber does not withhold any tax. You pay it yourself through quarterly estimated payments or when you file.
Does no tax on tips apply to Uber?
Yes. Rideshare drivers are on the IRS list of tipped occupations, so rider tips qualify. You can deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips from federal income tax, up to your net profit.
Will I get a 1099 from Uber?
For 2026 work you get a Form 1099-NEC if paid $2,000 or more, and a Form 1099-K if card and app payments were over $20,000 and more than 200 transactions. Report all your income even without a form.
What is the 2026 mileage rate for Uber drivers?
72.5 cents per mile from January 1 to June 30, 2026, and 76 cents per mile from July 1 to December 31, 2026.
When are quarterly taxes due for 2026?
April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027.
